Bristol City Ability FC win sports volunteer 'Oscar'

Bristol City Ability Football Club has just won an 'Oscar' of the Sports volunteering world.

It was presented with it's accolade by ex-Sport England Chair Trevor Brooking and TV broadcaster Martyn Lewis at Sport England's Volunteer Investment Programme awards.

The Club, which provides opportunities for people with disabilities to play football, received the National Sports Club Award for their work in recruiting, training and supporting volunteers in their club. Some of their volunteer initiatives include appointing a volunteer co-ordinator, creating a volunteer induction pack and developing volunteering links with local colleges, volunteer agencies, Business in the Community and Youth Offending Teams.

Mike Robey, Chairman of Bristol City Ability FC said: "This award has vindicated the tremendous efforts of all our volunteers, both non-disabled and disabled, in developing a successful club for disabled football players."

The club received a total of £4,000 to spend on volunteer management in recognition of its commitment to give volunteers the opportunity for training, self-development and for building links with the wider community.

Ex-Sport England Chair and former England footballer, Trevor Brooking, said: "It was a pleasure to present Bristol City Ability Football Club with this Sport England volunteer Award. They have shown real commitment and initiative in recruiting and supporting volunteers through their links with the local community, among other things.

"Providing disabled people with more opportunities to play sport is a key aim of Sport England and it is great to see this Club doing just that."

Bristol City Ability FC participates in regional and national, leagues, cup and tournaments based at Clifton College Sports Ground, Abbots Leigh, Bristol.
